The Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre (PRACC) is celebrating a major milestone this month, marking 30 years since opening its doors on 1 March 1996 as a cultural cornerstone for Melbourne’s north.

Over three decades, PRACC has grown alongside the City of Whittlesea community, evolving into a vibrant hub for live performance, conferences, exhibitions and community gatherings. From its early years as a purpose-built performing arts venue to its current role as a flexible, multi-use centre, PRACC has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors through its doors.

Since opening, the centre has hosted an extraordinary range of activity — from theatre, dance, music and comedy to graduation ceremonies, business events, community celebrations and cultural festivals. It has provided a platform for local creatives, touring performers and community groups alike, helping to nurture artistic expression and shared experiences across generations.

PRACC’s story mirrors the growth and change of Melbourne’s north. As the population has expanded and diversified, so too has the centre’s programming, technology and operations. The venue has adapted to changing audience expectations, embraced new production systems, and continually refreshed its offering to remain relevant, accessible and welcoming.

Behind the scenes, PRACC’s success has been shaped by the dedication of staff, technicians, artists, volunteers and partners who have contributed their skills and passion over the years. Many have spent decades working within the venue, carrying with them a deep knowledge of its spaces, stories and community impact.

While audiences experience the excitement of performances and events on stage, much of PRACC’s work happens quietly in the background — late-night bump-outs, technical rehearsals, programming decisions and meticulous planning that ensure each event runs smoothly. This commitment has helped the centre maintain its reputation as a trusted and professional venue within Victoria’s arts and events landscape.

As it enters its fourth decade, PRACC continues to look forward. The centre remains a place where creativity thrives and community connections are strengthened. The venue’s role extends beyond entertainment, contributing to the local economy, supporting tourism and reinforcing the City of Whittlesea’s identity as a place where culture and community are valued.

The 30-year milestone offers an opportunity to reflect not only on PRACC’s past achievements, but also on the people and moments that have defined it — the standing ovations, first performances, school concerts, community milestones and shared celebrations that have left a lasting imprint on the building and its audiences.

As PRACC marks this significant anniversary, the focus remains firmly on the future: continuing to evolve, respond to community needs and create memorable experiences for generations to come.

Happy 30th anniversary to Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre — a place where stories are shared, creativity is celebrated and community comes together.
