20 years of the Growling Frog Golf Course
Published on 02 October 2025
Twenty years ago, on a misty spring morning in Victoria’s Yan Yean, a curious sound echoed through the wetlands—a deep, resonant growl. Locals said it was the call of the growling grass frog, a rare and ancient creature whose voice once ruled the bushland. That morning, it wasn’t just the frog that stirred—it was the beginning of something extraordinary.
Designed by renowned golf course architect Graham Marsh, the Growling Frog Golf Course opened its gates with a superbly crafted 18-hole public layout, nestled among bushland, wetlands, and native River Red Gum trees. Set across 280 acres, the course quickly became more than just a place to play—it became a sanctuary for golfers and nature lovers alike.
Generations have teed off under the watchful gaze of the Great Dividing Range, their swings echoing across the driving range and chipping green. The pro-shop buzzed with stories of birdies and bogeys, while the café brewed comfort and camaraderie. Coaches shaped champions, and friendships were forged in the fairways.
Now, two decades later, the growl still lingers—not just in the wetlands, but in the hearts of those who walk the course. It’s a sound of pride, of resilience, and of celebration.
Here’s to 20 years of unforgettable rounds, breathtaking views, and the enduring spirit of the Growling Frog.
